Where the application starts and what it is

In shortThe application is a short gateway on the official careers site that checks the basics before you spend time on tests; use official routes only.

You apply through the official prison and probation careers site, which links to individual vacancies on the Ministry of Justice jobs portal. If no vacancy is open at the prison you want, you can register your interest.

At the time of writing, merit vacancies at several prisons close on 15 October 2026, including the HMP Birmingham post we used as an example here.

The application form is a gateway rather than a long written exercise. HMPPS describes it as taking approximately 10 minutes. The short form exists to check you meet the basic rules before you spend time on tests.

What you will be asked

In shortYour National Insurance number, nationality and right-to-work answers and personal details; check age, residency and nationality before you start.

The how-to-apply page says you provide your National Insurance number and answer eligibility questions about nationality and your right to work in the UK. Candidates must meet the Civil Service nationality rules.

The October 2026 advert lists UK nationals, Irish nationals, Commonwealth citizens with the right to work, people with status under the EU Settlement Scheme and some Turkish nationals with accrued rights; it also says visa sponsorship is unlikely.

You also give personal details and agree to the conditions of applying. Age is checked against the minimum of 18 at your start date; see the age limit guide.

Have to hand before you start

  • National Insurance number.
  • Identity documents.
  • A clear idea of your last few years of addresses and jobs. You do not need all of them for the first ten minutes, but you will need them for pre-employment checks, and the form's answers should be consistent with what you later submit.

High security prisons

For high security prisons, the vacancy will tell you that you must have lived in the UK for the three years immediately before applying, because that is needed for the Counter-Terrorism Check. Our nationality and residency guide explains the rules in detail.

Ticking the box for reasonable adjustments

In shortAnswer yes on the application, arrange support before any test, and you will not be penalised for asking; assessors cannot accommodate requests on the day.

The adjustments scheme supports people who may face disadvantage in assessments because of a diagnosed or undiagnosed disability, a long-term condition or a short-term need.

HMPPS defines a reasonable adjustment as a change to any part of the assessment process that removes or reduces a disadvantage, and says you will not be penalised or judged for applying for one.

To request adjustments, answer yes when the application asks. The recruitment team then contacts you to confirm and agree the support. The page says it is essential to arrange your support before any test, interview or assessment exercise, and the October 2026 advert adds that assessors cannot accommodate requests on the day.

  • Additional time for reading, writing and timed exercises.
  • Larger fonts.
  • Extended breaks for people with injuries.
  • Staff reading materials aloud or transcribing responses.
  • Interviews with written questions in advance or flexible scheduling.

The Operational Support Grade option and applying to several prisons

In shortYou can tick to be considered for Operational Support Grade as a fallback, and apply to several prisons with your first scores reused; decide before you tick.

On the application you can tick to be considered for the Operational Support Grade (OSG) role at the same time. The assessment centre also assesses suitability for OSG, so it works as a fallback if you do not secure a prison officer post.

Our operational support grade role guide covers the job and its Band 2 pay.

You can also apply to more than one prison; HMPPS says the scores from your first application are reused. Use the prison finder to compare locations, shift travel and local market supplements before you choose, and see the prisons list for the wider estate.

Whether to tick OSG

What OSGs do

  • Gate security and searches, deliveries, visitor supervision and CCTV and telephone monitoring, with limited contact with prisoners.
  • Some applicants use OSG as a route into a prison and then apply to move to an officer post.

Think before you tick

  • Others find the role too different from what they wanted.
  • Decide before you tick, because the offer could arrive first.

AI, honesty and 'your own experience'

In shortAI-generated content may lead to withdrawal; examples must be truthful and from your own experience.

The October 2026 advert includes a warning on the use of AI. It says AI-generated content in an application may lead to withdrawal, and that all examples and statements provided must be truthful, factually accurate and taken directly from your own experience.

The advert sits on the Ministry of Justice portal and is current at the time of writing, so re-read the wording on each vacancy you apply for.

The practical reading

  • Use AI, if you use it at all, to practise and to check structure, not to write examples for you.
  • A fabricated example is a risk twice over: it can be spotted at interview, where follow-up questions test the detail, and it can count as dishonesty in vetting.
  • Rehearse your own genuine stories against the published behaviours; we cover how in prison officer interview questions.

Criminal record, health and what you must declare

In shortDeclare every conviction and caution unless filtered, and every health condition; do not guess whether something is filtered.

HMPPS roles are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, so convictions and cautions, including spent ones, are checked unless they are filtered under DBS rules.

A conviction does not necessarily bar you, but failing to disclose will halt your application, and the vetting policy says non-disclosure is likely to lead to refusal with no leave to reapply for 12 months.

Do not guess about whether something is filtered: declare it and let the vetting team decide.

What to declare

Convictions and cautions

  • Checked, including spent ones, unless filtered under DBS rules.
  • A conviction does not necessarily bar you; failing to disclose will halt your application.

Health

  • The careers site says to declare physical or mental health conditions and that they will not necessarily prevent you doing the job.
  • Occupational health decides case by case and relevant adjustments will be recommended where appropriate. There is no published list of excluded conditions.

Common mistakes on the online application

In shortMistakes tend to be about what is missing: unchecked basics, skipped adjustments, a rarely checked email and no time to prepare.

The form is short, so mistakes tend to be about what is missing rather than what is wrong. The biggest is applying without checking that you meet the basics: age at start date, right to work, and for high security, three years of UK residence.

A second is skipping the adjustments tickbox because you are worried about how it looks, when the page explicitly says you will not be penalised, and it cannot be fixed on the day.

  • Applying before checking age, nationality and residency rules.
  • Not ticking reasonable adjustments, then finding they cannot be arranged on the day.
  • Leaving out a caution or conviction because it feels old or minor.
  • Using an email address you rarely check, so test invitations are missed.
  • Submitting at the deadline and having no time to prepare for the first online test.

After you submit: what happens next

In shortNext come the 25 to 40 minute scenario-based test and a values-based assessment of up to 20 minutes; the whole journey averages 6 to 7 months.

  • Scenario-based test25 to 40 minutesPractice test available
  • Values-based assessmentUp to 20 minutes
  • Application to first day6 to 7 monthsAverage

Once the application is accepted, you move to the scenario-based test, which HMPPS describes as testing basic numeracy skills and the behaviours expected of a prison officer. It takes 25 to 40 minutes and a practice test is available. After that comes the values-based assessment of up to 20 minutes.

Our guide to online assessments explains what to expect and how to prepare without inventing what is in them. The whole journey from application to first day averages 6 to 7 months; see how long recruitment takes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the prison officer online application take?

HMPPS says the online application takes approximately 10 minutes. You provide your National Insurance number, answer eligibility questions about nationality and the right to work in the UK, and give personal details. The tests that follow take longer, so allow time for them.

Is the prison officer application form long?

No. The initial form is short because the main assessment happens in later online tests, the assessment centre and the interview. It is not a long written personal statement, but the October 2026 advert makes clear that any examples you give must be truthful and from your own experience.

Can I apply to more than one prison?

Yes. HMPPS says you can apply to several prisons and that your scores from the first application are reused. Compare locations using the prison finder, check commute and shift start times and look at market supplements before choosing where to apply.

What is the OSG tickbox on the application?

You can choose to be considered for the Operational Support Grade role at the same time as prison officer. The assessment centre also assesses OSG suitability. It is a fallback, so decide beforehand whether you would accept an OSG offer, because the role and Band 2 pay are different.

Can I use AI to write my prison officer application?

The October 2026 advert warns that AI-generated content may lead to withdrawal and that examples must be truthful, factually accurate and from your own experience. Use AI for practice at most, never for inventing or polishing stories you did not live, and re-read the wording on each vacancy.

How do I ask for reasonable adjustments?

Answer yes to the reasonable adjustments question on the application. The recruitment team then contacts you to agree support, such as extra time or a reader. HMPPS says it is essential to arrange this before any test or assessment, and that you will not be penalised for asking.

What if no prison officer vacancy is open?

You can register your interest on the HMPPS careers site, and vacancies are advertised in batches, so check regularly. Using the time to prepare for fitness, gather documents and rehearse examples is sensible, as the whole process averages 6 to 7 months once you start.
