What the Interview Toolkit is

The Prison Officer Interview Toolkit is a practice workspace for the prison officer selection process in England and Wales. You write real examples into an evidence bank, practise answering behaviour-based questions in an AI mock interview that scores every answer, rehearse judgement scenarios and basic numeracy, draft your "why this job" answers, and follow a two-week plan that ends with a printable briefing. It costs £29 once. There is no subscription, you can buy as a guest without an account, and there is a 14-day money-back guarantee with no questions asked.

It is built around what HMPPS actually publishes. The how-to-apply page says the online assessment centre takes about 2 hours 30 minutes on a laptop with a webcam and includes an interview, a role-play scenario and a written test. The October 2026 Ministry of Justice advert says it assesses behaviours, strengths and abilities across communicating and influencing, managing a quality service, making effective decisions and caring. The toolkit's question bank is organised by the published Civil Service Success Profiles behaviours, and every question in it is labelled as practice.

Honest scope: what it is and what it is not

HMPPS does not publish an interview question bank, a scoring scheme, a pass mark, or how the interview, role play and written test are weighted. Nobody outside the recruitment team can honestly tell you the real questions, and this toolkit does not try to. Its questions are our own, written from the published behaviours; its scores come from an AI coach applying generic structured-interview criteria; and its scenario and numeracy items are our own practice, not the real scenario-based test.

That means three things you should know before you buy. First, it will not tell you whether you will pass, and nothing here is a pass rate or a promise. Second, the AI can be wrong, so use its feedback as one input alongside a friend or mentor. Third, you must write your own examples: the October 2026 advert says examples must be truthful and from your own experience and that AI-generated content may lead to withdrawal. The toolkit is designed to help you tell your own stories better, not to invent them.

What is inside, tab by tab

The workspace has seven tabs. You can use them in any order, and everything you enter is saved on your device straight away. After purchase you can create a free account so the same work follows you across devices; it syncs automatically and merges rather than overwrites.

How the AI mock interview works

You choose a behaviour (or a mix), read the question and write your answer. You can use the timer as a guide; it does not cut you off. When you press score, your answer and the question are sent to our AI service, which returns a practice score out of 10, a score and comment on five criteria (relevance, STAR structure, personal ownership, result and learning, and values and behaviours), what worked, specific gaps, a coaching tip, and a stronger version of your own answer.

The stronger version uses only the facts you wrote. Where an important detail is missing it inserts a bracketed placeholder such as [add the specific result] for you to fill in truthfully. It also suggests a different next question. Your scored answers are listed with the date, and progress charts show your average per behaviour and your trend over time, so you can see whether practice is working and which behaviours need more work.

A fair-use limit applies to AI answers each day to keep the service sustainable. If the AI service is temporarily unavailable the page tells you and nothing is lost: your answer stays in the box. Voice recording is not part of the toolkit: say your answer aloud first if you find it helps, then type what you said.

The behaviours it is organised around

Three of the areas HMPPS names are Civil Service behaviours with published definitions, and the fourth, caring, is described by HMPPS as a technical area. The toolkit adds other published behaviours so your examples have range, and two role themes taken from the HMPPS skills page.

Strengths questions are deliberately not scripted: Civil Service guidance says to answer them naturally rather than rehearse.

The evidence bank: the part most candidates skip

Most candidates practise answers to questions and forget that the questions are not the hard part. The hard part is having six to eight good, true examples ready, each rich enough to be adapted to different questions. The evidence bank is built for exactly that. For each example you write STAR sections with a live structure check, tag the behaviours it genuinely shows, and see a coverage grid across the published behaviours. When a behaviour has no example, you know where to look next.

You do not need prison experience. HMPPS says no specific experience or qualifications are needed and personal qualities are more important. Work, study, volunteering, sport, caring and community life all produce good examples. What matters is that the example has a real challenge, other people, a decision and a result, and that you can talk about it for two minutes and answer questions on it.

A realistic two weeks

The two-week plan starts with understanding the process and the behaviours, moves through brainstorming and writing examples, then rehearsing aloud, mock interviews, scenario practice, a full dry run on camera and a day-before checklist. Enter the date of your assessment and the plan maps itself to the days you have. If you have fewer than 14, it compresses and tells you what to prioritise. If you have more, it tells you when to start.

Pair it with the free guides: prison officer interview questions, the assessment centre and the online assessments explain the published process, and the plan tells you what to do with that knowledge each day.

Free tool or paid toolkit?

If you only want to practise one answer, the free interview practice tool is enough, including one free AI feedback. If you are preparing for a live campaign, the toolkit saves you hours: your examples live in one place, every answer gets scored, and you can see progress. It is deliberately priced as a one-off for a short, intense period of preparation rather than as a subscription.

Buying, access and your data

You can buy without creating an account: checkout is by Stripe and access is unlocked on the device you buy on. We then offer, but never require, a free account so the toolkit follows you to other devices and survives a cleared browser. If you buy while signed in, access is saved to your account immediately. Your evidence and answers are saved in your browser, and in your own private account area once you sign in. Analytics never include the text of your answers.

If you change your mind within 14 days, email us for a refund: no questions asked. Our terms set out the details, and your statutory consumer rights are not affected. If you want the fitness test covered as well, the Candidate Bundle includes this toolkit and the Fitness Pass Suite for £39.

Before you buy: check you can apply

Practice is only worth the effort if you can apply. Use the free eligibility checker, read our guides to the age limit, vetting and how long recruitment takes, and look at the pay so that you are applying with open eyes. For the physical side, see the fitness test guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does the toolkit contain the real interview questions?

No. HMPPS does not publish interview questions, and nobody outside recruitment can honestly supply them. Every question is our own practice question, labelled as such, written from the published Civil Service behaviours and the HMPPS skills page.

Will it help me pass?

It helps you prepare: examples ready, structure, practice and feedback. It cannot predict or promise a pass, and we publish no pass rates. HMPPS does not publish the pass mark or scoring.

How is the AI score calculated?

An AI coach reads your answer and scores it against generic structured-interview criteria: relevance, STAR structure, personal ownership, result and learning, and values and behaviours. It is a practice score, not an HMPPS score, and it can be wrong.

Can the AI write my answers?

It shows a stronger version of your own answer using only your facts, with placeholders for missing detail, so you can see how structure helps. You should not present generated content as your experience: the October 2026 advert warns that AI-generated content may lead to withdrawal.

Does it cover the scenario-based test?

It includes our own scenario and numeracy practice, clearly labelled. HMPPS publishes only that the scenario-based test takes 25 to 40 minutes and tests basic numeracy and the behaviours expected of a prison officer, so we make no claim that our items resemble it. Use the official practice test too.

Do I need an account?

No. You can buy as a guest and use it on that device. After purchase you can create a free account so your access and your saved work follow you to other devices. Account creation is optional.

What if I do not like it?

There is a 14-day money-back guarantee with no questions asked. See the terms for how to request it.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, it is designed to work at phone width, but writing STAR answers is easier on a laptop. You will need a laptop with a webcam for the real online assessment centre.

Is voice recording included?

No. You type your answers. Saying an answer aloud first, then typing it, is good practice and costs nothing.
