An independent guide for people who work in, or want to join, the Prison Service.
We explain pay, pensions, joining and conduct in plain English, show our sources and keep every claim dated.
What this site is
Prison Officer Pay is an independent information site for prison officers and the people thinking of becoming one. It brings together the published rules on pay, pensions, joining and conduct and discipline, and turns them into guides and calculators you can actually use.
Who it is for
- Candidates who want to understand eligibility, vetting, the fitness test and training before they apply.
- Serving officers who want to understand their payslip, overtime, allowances and pension.
- Colleagues, partners and family members who want a straight answer without wading through policy documents.
Independence
We are not part of, endorsed by, or affiliated with HMPPS, the Ministry of Justice, the Scottish Prison Service, the Northern Ireland Prison Service, the Prison Officers' Association (POA) or any other union or employer. Nobody pays us to change what we write. Where we link to official sources, it is so you can check us.
How the site is funded
The guides and core calculators are free. Some deeper tools are paid: you buy once, there is no subscription, and you never need an account to buy. Those sales are how the site is kept running. We always label a paid tool as paid.
What we are not
We are not a pensions administrator, payroll provider, regulated financial adviser, lawyer or union. Calculators give estimates based on published rules and the figures you enter. They do not replace your payslip, your scheme administrator, your establishment's HR team or advice from your representative.
Who is behind it
Prison Officer Pay is an independent UK publication run by a small team that also runs sister pay sites for other public services. Content is published under the byline "Prison Officer Pay Editorial", and most of it is drafted with AI assistance from primary sources and then checked; the editorial policy explains this in detail. We do not claim to be serving prison officers or regulated advisers.
How we work
Read our methodology and sources and our editorial policy to see how facts are chosen, dated and corrected. If you find a mistake, please tell us.
Part of the independent UK public-service pay network
We also publish pay, pension and career resources for other public-service workers. They are separate sites with their own data and guides:
- PolicePay: Police salary, pension, overtime and mortgage calculators with regulation-based guides.
- Firefighter Pay: Firefighter pay scales, overtime, on-call pay and pension calculators.
- FrontlinePay: NHS pay, pension and careers calculators and guides.
- UK Teacher Pay: Teacher take-home pay, Teachers' Pension Scheme and pay-scale calculators and guides.
We link to them where a comparison genuinely helps readers. We have not checked their figures for this site, and nothing here depends on them.
