Which pension?

The yearly figure on your payslip, P60 or statement. The first row shown is an example, not a typical pension.
Leave blank if it started before 6 April 2026: you then get the full increase.

The September 2026 CPI figure that sets April 2027 is published by the ONS at 7am on 21 October 2026. Until then every result here is a scenario. August 2026 CPI was 3.1%, but August does not set the increase.

Gross, before tax. Rounded to the penny. Scenario rows are arithmetic, not forecasts.

Illustrative planning estimate based on published rules, not financial, legal, pension or tax advice. Your payroll record, contract and scheme administrator control your actual position.

Rules checked 7 October 2026 against GOV.UK, legislation.gov.uk, the Civil Service Pension Scheme and the ONS. Not modelled: Guaranteed Minimum Pension, tax, lump-sum exchange, early-retirement reductions. Independent: not affiliated with HMPPS, the MoJ, the POA or the scheme administrator.

What this calculator does

Every April the Civil Service Pension Scheme applies a prices-linked change to your pension. This tool shows what that change is worth in pounds for three situations: a pension already in payment, a deferred pension, and the alpha pension you are still building as a serving prison officer.

The figure that sets April 2027 is the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) change in the 12 months to September 2026. The ONS publishes it at 7am on 21 October 2026. Until then the slider is a scenario, not a forecast, and we do not guess the number.

The rules the tool uses

  • Pensions in payment rise by the September-to-September change in CPI. The 2026 rise was 3.8%, from 6 April 2026.
  • First year: a pension in payment for less than a year gets a proportionate amount, worked out in complete months. Our tool counts months to an expected increase date of Monday 12 April 2027. The 2027 Order has not been made, so that date is an assumption.
  • No cut: if prices have not risen there is no increase, so the in-payment figure never falls below zero.
  • Deferred pensions are increased under the Pensions (Increase) Act 1971, counting from the day after your last day of service.
  • Serving alpha members: the pension built up is adjusted each April at a Treasury rate currently linked to CPI. We found no extra percentage on top of CPI for alpha, so none is added.
  • Guaranteed Minimum Pension (GMP): the Order reduces the increase on a GMP part by what the state pays. Alpha has no GMP, but classic, premium and nuvos service may. The tool does not split it out; your administrator does.

A worked example

Take a pension of £12,000 a year that has been in payment for over a year. At a scenario CPI of 3.0% the increase is £360, taking it to £12,360. At 4.0% it is £480. Someone whose pension started on 1 October 2026 has six complete months by the expected increase date, so at 3.0% they get half the rate (1.5%) on £12,000, which is £180 in the first year.

August 2026 CPI was 3.1%. We show it as one row in the scenario table only because it is the latest published figure. It does not set the April 2027 increase and the September figure can be higher or lower.

What it cannot tell you

  • The September 2026 CPI figure, until the ONS publishes it.
  • Your exact first-year proportion. Your administrator applies the Order's own table to your start date.
  • Tax, the effect of a lump-sum exchange, or early-retirement reductions.
  • Whether your own scheme section applies any extra rule. Check your annual statement or ask Capita, the scheme administrator.

Pension increase calculator: frequently asked questions

When will I know my prison officer pension increase for April 2027?

The ONS publishes September 2026 CPI at 7am on 21 October 2026. That figure sets the increase. The formal Pensions (Increase) Review Order and GOV.UK notice follow in early 2027, as they did in February 2026 for the 3.8% rise.

Which month of CPI sets the April increase?

September. The increase for pensions in payment is the change in CPI over the 12 months to the previous September (GOV.UK public service pensions increase 2026). For April 2027 that is the 12 months to September 2026.

Do I get the full increase in my first year of retirement?

Not usually. A pension in payment for less than a year gets a proportionate amount, based on complete months in payment. The tool estimates this from your start date using an assumed increase date of 12 April 2027; your administrator uses the Order's own table.

Is the alpha pension I am still building increased by CPI plus something?

We found no margin above CPI for alpha. The Civil Superannuation annual account says the total accrued is adjusted at a rate set by HM Treasury, currently linked to CPI. Some other public schemes add a margin (the NHS adds 1.5 points and police 1.25), so do not assume the same for alpha.

What happens to a deferred pension?

It is increased under the Pensions (Increase) Act 1971, which treats the pension as beginning the day after your last day of service. The first-year proportion therefore runs from that date. Check your deferred benefit statement for your own figure.

What if CPI is negative?

A pension in payment does not fall. The CSPS says no increase is applied if prices have fallen or stayed level. We have not verified what happens to an active alpha pot in that case, so the tool does not model negative CPI.

What about the Guaranteed Minimum Pension?

If you have a GMP from contracted-out service in classic, premium or nuvos, the Order reduces the increase on that part by the amount the state pays, unless the Treasury directs otherwise. This tool does not split it out. Ask Capita how it applies to you.

Does the pay award change my pension increase?

No. The pension increase follows September CPI, not the PSPRB pay award. A pay award can change what you build up from now on, but not the April increase on what you have already built.
