What this salary calculator does

A prison officer's salary is not a single number. It depends on your band, your pay point within it, the contract hours you work, whether you are paid on the National, Outer London or Inner London scale, and whether you work at one of the 18 prisons that pay a market supplement. Then tax, National Insurance, pension and sometimes a student loan decide what you actually receive. This calculator holds all of those moving parts in one place. You choose them from lists, and it turns the published 2026/27 pay tables into annual, monthly, weekly and hourly figures, gross and net.

It covers Bands 2 to 5 and Bands 7 to 12 in England and Wales (HMPPS). Band 6 is left out because no pay values for it are published in the Review Body's tables. If you pick your prison from the list, the pay zone and any supplement are set for you. The result is a planning figure for a standard case, with every assumption shown beside it, so you can compare it with your payslip and spot a gap worth asking payroll about.

The tool has four more views beyond the headline result. A comparison tab shows what the same pay would be on other contracts, pay points, zones and grades. A pay-rise tab shows what a percentage award, a step up a pay point or a longer contract would be worth after tax. The paid pay report turns your result into a printable document with payslip checks. And the AI assistant answers one question about your own numbers free, with no sign-in.

How the 2026/27 pay tables work

The Pay Review Body's 25th Report, published on 26 March 2026 and accepted by Government in full, gave a 3.5% consolidated and pensionable increase to Bands 3 to 12 from 1 April 2026, paid in June 2026 salaries and backdated. Band 2 got 3.5% on top of the National Living Wage rise to £12.71 an hour. Bands 3 and 5 staff in post on 31 March 2026 also moved up one pay point (unless on a formal poor performance procedure), and Bands 8 to 11 received a further 3 1/3% progression capped at the band maximum.

Pay is published as annual figures for a 37 hour week. The headline figures people quote, such as £34,928 for a Band 3 starter, already include the 20% unsocial working hours allowance, which is 25% for Band 2 and an equivalent 20% required hours addition for Bands 7 to 11. Longer contracts add additional committed hours (ACH, or the pensionable ACHP) on top.

London scales set the maximum at the National maximum plus a fixed differential (£5,218 Inner London, £3,432 Outer London for 37 hours) and keep each point in the same proportion. Outer London: Belmarsh, Downview, Feltham, High Down, Isis and controllers' offices at Bronzefield and Thameside. Inner London: Brixton, Pentonville, Wandsworth, Westminster HQ, Wormwood Scrubs.

Gross to net: the method, line by line

The calculation follows the same model as our take-home pay by band guide, so the two always agree. First the alpha pension: the Civil Service Pension Scheme publishes 2026/27 member contribution rates of 4.6% on pensionable earnings up to £36,199, 5.45% from £36,200 to £56,000, 7.35% to £150,000 and 8.05% above. The rate for the band your annual pensionable pay falls into is applied to all of your pensionable pay, not just the slice above the line. The contribution is deducted before income tax.

Next, income tax on what is left, for England, Wales and Northern Ireland: a £12,570 personal allowance, 20% to £50,270, 40% to £125,140 and 45% above, with the allowance tapered away between £100,000 and £125,140. Switch to Scotland and the 19%, 20%, 21%, 42%, 45% and 48% bands are used instead. Employee National Insurance is 8% between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above, charged on gross pay before pension. A student loan, if you choose one, takes 9% of pay over the plan threshold: £26,900 for Plan 1, £29,385 for Plan 2, £33,795 for Plan 4 and £25,000 for Plan 5, and 6% over £21,000 for a postgraduate loan.

Finally, monthly figures are the annual figure divided by 12 and weekly figures are divided by 52.143. Hourly figures divide annual pay by 52.143 and by your contracted weekly hours. That is our own convention, not an HMPPS payroll formula, so your payslip's own hourly figure may differ by a few pence.

Reproduced by the calculator. These match the take-home guide's tables. The Bullingdon row applies pension to £34,928 only because the market supplement is non-pensionable.

Pay zones, prisons and market supplements

Where you work matters twice. The pay zone sets your scale: the Outer London and Inner London scales sit well above National, for example £38,840 and £40,876 against £34,928 at Band 3 pay point 1 on 37 hours. Tax and National Insurance are the same everywhere, so London pay is simply taxed on a higher gross.

Separately, 18 prisons pay a market supplement to Band 3 officers on Fair and Sustainable terms because of recruitment and retention problems. The supplement is not part of base salary, is non-pensionable and is paid in twelve monthly instalments. According to the HMPPS jobs site on 3 October 2026 the current tiers are £1,500 at Grendon and Springhill, Huntercombe and Standford Hill; £2,000 at Bedford, Coldingley, Downview, Feltham, High Down, Highpoint, Send, Stocken, The Mount and Winchester; £3,000 at Aylesbury; and £3,500 at Bullingdon, Elmley, Swaleside and Woodhill. Prisons that qualify keep that status until at least March 2027, and the framework allows gradual erosion of about £500 a year. Pick your prison and the calculator fills in both the zone and the supplement. Our market supplements guide and London pay guide cover the detail.

Contract hours and the pension question

HMPPS says all trainee officers start on 37 hours and, once training is complete, can choose 39 or 41; the published tables also include 38 and 40 hour versions. Each longer contract adds additional committed hours (ACH). The pay table also shows a pensionable version, ACHP, on the 39 hour contract. Whether plain ACH hours are themselves pensionable is not confirmed in the sources we read, and the calculator does not hide that. Under 'Are your additional hours pensionable?' you can choose our default, that all published pay is pensionable, or the narrower reading that only the 37 hour pay is.

The difference is real money: for a pay-point-1 officer on 41 hours (£39,334), treating everything as pensionable gives a take-home of about £30,125 a year; treating only the £34,928 as pensionable raises it to about £30,555, because less goes into pension and less tax relief is taken. Check the pensionable pay line on your payslip to see which applies. Our contract hours guide and hourly rate guide show how the extra hours are priced in the tables.

What a pay rise is worth after tax

Headline percentages overstate what reaches your account. The pay-rise tab applies a percentage to your contracted pay and shows the take-home difference. A 3.5% rise, the size of the 2026/27 award, adds £1,222 gross a year for a Band 3 officer at pay point 1 on 37 hours, but about £835 after tax, National Insurance and pension, so roughly two thirds of the rise. The 2027/28 award is not decided: the Ministry of Justice formally started the round on 15 July 2026 and the Review Body has not published a timetable, so treat the slider as a what-if and not a forecast.

Progression can feel smaller than it is. At Band 3 the step from pay point 2 (£36,150) to pay point 3 (£36,778) adds £628 gross, but it also lifts you across the £36,200 alpha band edge, so the pension rate steps from 4.6% to 5.45% on all of your pensionable pay. Net pay rises by only about £179. That is not a loss, because the extra contributions build alpha pension, but it is why the headline and the take-home gap is wider at that step.

Using the result: payslip checks and what to ask

For a full line-by-line version of this check, the paid Personal Pay Report prints your expected figures beside the lines to look for on your payslip. For an annual view with overtime, promotion and award scenarios, see Pay Planner Pro.

  1. Compare your gross for the month with the calculator's gross divided by 12. A four-weekly payslip will differ.
  2. Check the pensionable pay line and your alpha rate against the bands above.
  3. Check your tax code. 1257L gives the full personal allowance; anything else changes tax.
  4. Look for other deductions: student loan, trade union subscription, season ticket loan, cycle to work or other salary sacrifice.
  5. If your net pay differs by more than about £20 a month, ask payroll for a written breakdown and raise it with your POA rep if it is not resolved.

Scope and limits

This calculator is for England and Wales HMPPS pay. The Scottish Prison Service is outside the Review Body: it recruits through two routes and publishes starting salaries from 1 April 2026 of £37,682 rising to £44,248 within three years (Residential Officer) and £30,789 rising to £34,878 (Operations Officer), but we did not find its full pay scale, so SPS pay is not modelled. Northern Ireland's 2026/27 outcome was not found either. You can apply Scottish income tax bands to the England and Wales pay tables, which is useful for someone living in Scotland and working for HMPPS, but do not treat the result as SPS pay. The employer pension rate for 2026/27 is not confirmed and does not affect your take-home, so it is not shown.

The tool does not know your tax code, other income, salary sacrifice or arrears. It is general information, not tax, pension or financial advice. Your payroll record and contract control your actual pay.

Prison officer salary calculator: frequently asked questions

How much does a prison officer earn in 2026/27?

In England and Wales a Band 3 prison officer on the National scale earns £34,928 at pay point 1 and £36,778 at pay point 3 on 37 hours including the 20% unsocial hours allowance. Longer contracts, London scales and market supplements add to that. Take-home on those figures is about £2,282 and £2,366 a month.

How much is a prison officer's take-home pay a month?

About £2,282 a month for a Band 3 National pay point 1 officer on 37 hours, after alpha pension, income tax and National Insurance, on a 1257L tax code and with no student loan. Your own figure depends on your pay point, contract hours, zone and deductions; the calculator works it out.

Does the salary include the unsocial hours allowance?

Yes. The published figures include the 20% unsocial working hours allowance (25% for Band 2, an equivalent 20% required hours addition for Bands 7 to 11). It is pensionable and already part of the quoted salary, not an extra.

Is the market supplement included?

No. The supplement is added separately by the calculator when you choose your prison or type an amount. It is non-pensionable, paid in twelve instalments, and taxed with NI like other pay. HMPPS adverts for those prisons quote the salary including it.

Why does a bigger salary give a smaller increase in take-home?

Because each extra pound is taxed at 20% and attracts 8% National Insurance, and the alpha contribution rate applies to all your pensionable pay and can step up at £36,200 and £56,000. Our worked example shows a £628 rise at Band 3 adding about £179 net.

Which tax and National Insurance rates does it use?

2026/27 rates from GOV.UK: a £12,570 personal allowance, 20% to £50,270, 40% to £125,140 and 45% above (or the Scottish bands if you choose Scotland), and employee NI at 8% to £50,270 and 2% above. Alpha rates are the Civil Service Pension Scheme's 2026/27 member rates.

Are additional committed hours pensionable?

It is not confirmed in the sources we read. The 'P' in ACHP indicates pensionable additional hours, but plain ACH is not stated. The calculator defaults to treating all published pay as pensionable and lets you switch to the narrower reading; check your payslip.

Does it work for Scotland or Northern Ireland?

The pay tables are for England and Wales. SPS and NIPS pay are separate and not modelled here. You can choose Scottish income tax if you are a Scottish taxpayer working for HMPPS.

Is it saved or shared?

Your choices are stored in your browser on this device so other pay tools can reuse them. Nothing is sent to us unless you ask the AI assistant a question, which shares the figures on the page with our AI service.
