How much of your salary is the unsocial hours allowance, what is it worth after tax and pension, and what would a different rate do to your month? Built on the verified flat percentage, not a made-up shift premium.

If you searched for a prison officer shift allowance calculator expecting a rate per night or a premium for Sundays, the first thing to know is that the published position is different. In England and Wales, officers in Bands 3 to 5 are paid a flat unsocial working hours (UWH) allowance of 20% of contracted hours. HMPPS describes it to the Pay Review Body as paid in recognition that some staff are expected to regularly work unsocial hours as part of their rostered shift pattern, calculated at 20% of contracted hours worked, and pensionable. The salary figures HMPPS advertises already include it: the £34,928 starting salary is £29,107 base pay plus £5,821 of allowance.
This calculator therefore does something specific. It takes your band, pay point, zone and contract, splits your published pay into base pay and allowance, and shows what the allowance is worth gross and after tax, National Insurance and pension. It then lets you move the percentage to see what a different rate would mean, which is useful because the Review Body will look at unsocial hours payments again in its 2027 Report.
Bands 3, 4 and 5 receive 20% of contracted hours. Band 2 Operational Support Grades receive 25%, a temporary increase from 20% made in the 2025 Report and maintained, by recommendation 10 of the 2026 Report, until the 2027 Report is published. Bands 7 to 11 receive an equivalent 20% Required Hours Addition (RHA), which is also pensionable. Band 12, the Prison Group Director, is a spot rate of £125,902 that is inclusive, so there is no add-on.
There is a mismatch worth knowing about at Band 2. The Review Body's table shows £25,409 base and £31,761 with the 25% payment in the National zone. On 3 October 2026 an HMPPS Operational Support Grade role page quoted £30,491 for other locations, which is the base plus 20%. We default to the Review Body's 25% because it is the primary source and the recommendation is explicit, and the calculator has a 20% chip so you can see the other reading. Check your advert and contract for the figure that applies to you.

The sources we could read describe a flat percentage and not a rate per unsocial shift. We found no separate night, weekend or bank holiday premium for Bands 3 to 5 beyond the 20% allowance, no published rule that reduces the allowance in a month with fewer nights, and no published definition of exactly which hours count as unsocial or how a move onto a day-only post is treated. Job adverts describe the role as an average of 37 hours a week including nights, evenings, weekends and bank holidays on a rolling pattern; we treat that wording as indicative because the page it came from was later removed.
That is why the calculator's per-shift figure is labelled as arithmetic only. If you enter eight unsocial shifts a month, it divides your annual allowance across them so you can see a number, but the allowance is not paid that way. If your contract or payslip shows a separate enhancement, enter it in the shift pattern earnings planner, which has a labelled box for exactly that. Our guides on night shift pay, weekend pay and bank holiday pay go through what is and is not confirmed.
The allowance grows with your contracted hours. The Review Body's tables note that additional committed hours (ACH) and the pensionable version (ACHP) also attract the unsocial hours allowance, and every published contract figure is quoted including it. At Band 3 pay point 1, 37 hours including allowance is £34,928 and 41 hours is £39,334. How the allowance splits between the first 37 hours and the additional hours is not published, so the calculator shows the allowance on the 37 hour base, which is the part we can state exactly, and keeps the pay for additional hours as published.
At 31 July 2025 the Review Body found 45% of Band 3 staff on 37 hours, 29% on 39 hours with two ACH, 15% on 39 hours with two ACHP, 9% on 41 hours and no more than 1% on one or three ACH, so most officers have extended their contracts and the allowance applies to a larger base for them. See our contract hours guide.
A percentage of base pay is a gross figure. After 20% income tax, 8% National Insurance and the alpha pension contribution, a Band 3 officer at pay point 1 keeps roughly £3,977 a year of the £5,821 allowance, about 68%; at pay point 3 about £3,938 of £6,130, because the higher pension rate of 5.45% applies. The calculator shows the split between what you keep, income tax, National Insurance and pension for your own case.
The allowance is also pensionable, which many other payments are not. Alpha builds 2.32% of your actual pensionable earnings each scheme year, so a £6,130 allowance adds about £142 a year of pension in today's money, before revaluation, compared with nothing if it were non-pensionable like Payment Plus or a market supplement. It also pushes your pensionable pay towards the next contribution band. These are our calculations from the published rules and not a pension quote; use the alpha pension calculator for a projection.
Unsocial hours payments are on the Pay Review Body's rolling review programme for the 2027 Report, covering Bands 2 to 5 and 7 to 11, and the Ministry of Justice formally started the 2027/28 pay round with a remit letter on 15 July 2026. In the last round the POA asked for 33% and the Review Body made no change. HMPPS is also reviewing night working with the POA. None of that is decided, and no timetable for the report has been published.
The what-if tab lets you test it. For a Band 3 National officer at pay point 3, each extra percentage point of allowance adds about £306 gross a year and about £221 after tax and pension. A move to 25% would add roughly £87 a month to take-home, and 33% about £225 a month, on our arithmetic. These are scenarios, not forecasts. The allowance cost HMPPS £169 million in 2024/25, about 10% of the paybill, which is part of why it is a large target for any review in either direction.

A flat 20% of contracted hours for Bands 3 to 5 in England and Wales (25% for Band 2, temporarily), pensionable, and already included in the published salary figures. Bands 7 to 11 have an equivalent 20% required hours addition. It is not paid per night or per weekend as far as the published sources show.
We found no separate night premium for Bands 3 to 5 beyond the 20% allowance. If your contract or payslip shows one, enter it in the shift pattern earnings planner as your own figure. Check with HR, because the Review Body says it will review unsocial hours in its 2027 Report and HMPPS is reviewing night working.
Yes. HMPPS evidence to the Pay Review Body says it is calculated at 20% of contracted hours and is pensionable, so it counts towards your alpha pension and your contribution band.
The Pay Review Body raised the Band 2 payment from 20% to 25% in 2025 and, in recommendation 10 of the 2026 Report, kept it until the 2027 Report is published. An HMPPS role page quoted a figure that equals 20%, so check your own contract.
At Band 3 pay point 3 on the National scale it is about £3.18 per contracted hour (£6,130 a year), taking the contracted hourly figure from £15.89 to £19.06, on our convention of annual pay divided by 52.143 and by 37.
On the published rules no: it is a flat percentage of contracted hours, so the number of nights does not change it. It does rise if your contracted hours rise, because additional committed hours also attract it.
It might. The Review Body will review unsocial hours payments for Bands 2 to 5 and 7 to 11 in its 2027 Report and the 2027/28 round started in July 2026, but nothing is decided. The rate what-ifs in the calculator are scenarios.
No. The 2022/23 award raised the unsocial hours payment from 17% to 20%. The old version of this page referred to 17% or 20%; the verified current rate is 20% for Bands 3 to 5 and 25% for Band 2.
