What decides the April 2027 increase
In shortThe change in CPI over the 12 months to September 2026 decides it, and the ONS publishes that figure on 21 October 2026.
- Month that mattersSeptember 2026September-to-September change in CPI

- Known today?NoAugust 2026 CPI was 3.1%, but August does not set the increase
GOV.UK's 2026 notice says public service pensions rise in line with the September-to-September increase in CPI. The 3.8% rise from 6 April 2026 was the 12 months to September 2025, and the next one follows the same pattern.
The ONS lists "Consumer price inflation, UK: September 2026" for 21 October 2026. Once it is out, the Treasury makes the formal orders and GOV.UK publishes a notice, as it did in February 2026.

In shortA pension in payment for a full year rises by the whole of September CPI, and never falls when prices do not rise.
Retired prison officers draw a Civil Service pension. Each April it goes up by the September-to-September CPI change. For 2026 that was 3.8%, effective 6 April 2026.
The Civil Service Pension Scheme says that if prices have fallen or stayed level, no increase is applied. So a pension in payment is never cut by the increase.
| Effective from | Rate (September CPI basis) | What £10,000 becomes |
|---|---|---|
| 10 April 2023 | 10.1% | £11,010 |
| 8 April 2024 | 6.7% | £11,748 |
| 7 April 2025 | 1.7% | £11,947 |

Rates from GOV.UK pensions increase notices. Each is applied to the previous year's pension, so they compound. Arithmetic, not a forecast.
The first-year rule: pensions under a year old
In shortA pension that has been in payment for less than a year gets a proportionate part of the increase, counted in complete months.
GOV.UK says a pension in payment for less than a year is increased by a proportionate amount depending on the months it has been in payment. The 2026 Order writes it as the percentage multiplied by the number of complete months over 12.
The Order's explanatory table sets the band for each start date, and those bands roll over a little after the increase date rather than on it. For April 2027 the Order has not been made, so we assume an increase date of Monday 12 April 2027, the same calendar as 2021.
Two illustrative officers at a 3.0% scenario
Retired for years, £12,000 pension
- Full year in payment, so the full rate applies.
- £12,000 x 3.0% = £360, taking the pension to £12,360.
- At a 2% scenario the rise is £240; at 4% it is £480.
Retired 1 October 2026, £20,000 pension
- Six complete months to the expected increase date.
- 3.0% x 6/12 = 1.5%, so £300, taking the pension to £20,300.
- From April 2028 the full rate applies in the usual way.
Deferred pensions: if you have left
In shortA deferred pension is increased under the same 1971 Act, with the clock starting the day after your last day of service.
If you left the Prison Service with a deferred pension, it is increased each April under the Pensions (Increase) Act 1971. Section 8(2) treats a pension as beginning on the day after the last day of the service it is paid for.
That means the first-year proportion counts from the day after you left. The act does not itself set out the proportion; the annual Order does, using the deemed start date.
- Left before April 2026: expect the full September CPI increase.
- Left in 2026/27: expect a proportionate amount by complete months.
- Your deferred benefit statement and Capita hold the real figure.
- Our guide to leaving early with a deferred pension covers your options.
| Last day of service | Months counted | Increase | New pension |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 September 2024 | 12 (full year) | £240 | £8,240 |
| 31 August 2026 | 7 | £140 | £8,140 |

Serving officers: your alpha pension
In shortThe alpha pension you have built up is adjusted each April at a Treasury rate currently linked to CPI; we found no margin on top.
- Alpha accrual2.32%Of pensionable earnings each scheme year
- Illustrative pot£5,000 a yearAnnual pension built up, invented round number
- At 3.1% (August CPI, example)+£155Takes it to £5,155; not a forecast
Alpha is a career-average scheme: each scheme year you add 2.32% of your pensionable earnings as pension. Civil Superannuation's annual account says the total accrued is adjusted each year at a rate set by HM Treasury, currently linked to CPI.
The 2026 revaluation order set the change in prices at 3.8% for the year to 31 March 2026. Some other public schemes add a margin on top of prices, such as the NHS at 1.5 points and the police at 1.25. We found nothing equivalent for alpha, so our tool adds none.
Legacy sections, McCloud and the GMP
In shortClassic, premium and nuvos pensions rise by the same Order, and the GMP part is treated differently where the state pays.
Prison officers who joined before 2015 may hold service in classic, premium or nuvos, and many have a McCloud remedy choice for 2015 to 2022 service. Once a pension is in payment, the annual increase is the same CPI-linked Order whichever section it came from. Our McCloud remedy guide and section comparison explain the choices.
The 2026 Order says that where someone qualifies for Guaranteed Minimum Pension increases from the same employment, the increase is reduced by the rate of the GMP increase, unless the Treasury directs otherwise. Alpha has no GMP, but contracted-out service in older sections may.
- The calculator does not split a GMP part out of your pension.
- Your statement or Capita shows whether you have one.
- A GMP can mean the scheme pays less of the increase and the state pays the rest, so check the total, not the scheme share alone.
What to do before and after 21 October
In shortUse scenarios now, replace them with the real figure on 21 October, and check the first April payment against it.
Before April 2027
- Find your yearly pension from your statement, payslip or P60.
- Note your start date (retired) or last day of service (deferred).
- Enter both in the free calculator.
- Re-check on 21 October with the official figure.
- If the April payment looks wrong, raise it with Capita in writing.

Planning around the increase
In shortThe increase protects what you have built against prices, but it is one input into a retirement plan, not the whole of it.
A CPI-linked increase keeps the buying power of the pension broadly level against average prices. It does not link to wages, so in years when pay awards beat CPI a retired colleague slips behind a serving one, and in years when CPI beats pay it can be the other way round.
For your own numbers, the free pension calculator builds a projection from your pay and years. The Pension & Lump-Sum Report (£14.99, one-off) turns it into a printable briefing with retirement-age and lump-sum comparisons. Neither is needed to check the April increase.
- The increase applies to the pension after any lump-sum exchange, so a smaller pension gets a smaller cash rise.
- Tax is paid on the pension as income, so the rise is before tax.
- Your pension statement shows the figures the increase is applied to.
Frequently asked questions
How much will my prison officer pension go up in April 2027?
It is not known yet. It will equal the change in CPI in the 12 months to September 2026, which the ONS publishes on 21 October 2026, for a pension in payment for a full year. A newer pension gets a proportionate amount.
When is the September 2026 CPI figure published?
The ONS release calendar lists Consumer price inflation, UK: September 2026 for 21 October 2026 at 7am, checked on 7 October 2026.
Does August's 3.1% set the April 2027 increase?
No. CPI was 3.1% in the 12 months to August 2026, but the increase follows September. The September figure can be higher or lower, so treat 3.1% as an example only.
I retired this year. Do I get the full increase?
Probably not in the first year. A pension in payment for less than a year gets a proportionate amount by complete months. The calculator estimates it from your start date, but Capita applies the Order's own table.
Is a serving officer's alpha pension revalued by CPI plus something?
We found no margin above CPI for alpha. The annual account says the accrued pension is adjusted at a Treasury rate currently linked to CPI. Other schemes add a margin, but do not assume alpha does.
What happens to a deferred pension?
It is increased under the Pensions (Increase) Act 1971, with the pension treated as beginning the day after your last day of service. Check your deferred benefit statement for your figure.
Can the increase be negative?
Not for a pension in payment. The Civil Service Pension Scheme says no increase is applied if prices have fallen or stayed level. We have not verified how an active alpha pot is treated in that case.
Does the pay rise change my pension increase?
No. The pension increase follows September CPI, not the PSPRB pay award. The pay rise affects what you build from now on.
Who tells me my new pension?
Capita, the Civil Service Pension Scheme administrator since 1 December 2025, sends payslips and P60s. If the April payment does not show the rise, ask them in writing.
