Who the report is for
It is for serving prison officers and other prison staff in the Civil Service pension scheme who are thinking about what happens to their income if their health or an injury changes their working life. You might be on long-term sick leave, going through an occupational health process, recovering from an injury at work, or simply wanting to understand your position before you need it.
It is a calm, organised way to see the numbers and prepare. If you are going through this now, we are sorry; it is a difficult thing to deal with while unwell. This report is meant to take some of the paperwork stress away, not to replace proper support.
What you can already do for free
The free ill-health and injury benefit calculator already gives you the lower and upper tier ill-health pension estimates, the CSIBS injury benefit estimate, and the process and appeals steps. If that is all you need, you do not need to pay for anything.
The report adds the parts that save time and help you organise yourself: the evidence checklist, the dated timeline, the printable report, saved reports and the ability to ask the AI about your own figures.
How the estimate is built
For ill-health, the report uses regulations 70 to 76 of the Civil Service alpha pension regulations. The lower tier is all your accrued pension, paid immediately with no early-payment reduction. The upper tier adds a top-up equal to your accrued earnings-related pension multiplied by A divided by B, where A is the years from leaving to the day before your prospective normal pension age, and B is the shorter of your service years and the years in which you earned pension.
For example, with £9,280 a year built up over 10 years and 20 years to normal pension age, the lower tier is £9,280 a year and the upper tier is £27,840 a year. It is an estimate: the Scheme Medical Adviser decides which tier applies, and Capita calculates the pension.
For injury benefit, the report uses the CSIBS rules: the impairment band, the guaranteed minimum income by length of service, and the lump sum as a share of pensionable earnings. In the example of £40,000 earnings, a material impairment and 15 to 25 years of service, the guaranteed income is 75%, which is £30,000. With £12,000 of other income, the allowance is £18,000, and the lump sum is £15,000. Those numbers are for illustration only.
Honest scope: what is decided by other people
Whether you qualify for ill-health retirement is decided by the Scheme Medical Adviser. Whether an injury is a qualifying injury under CSIBS is decided under the scheme rules at the Minister's discretion, and whether an assault by a prisoner qualifies is judged case by case. The report shows what the benefit would be if those decisions went a certain way. It never says they will.
Time limits matter. An ill-health appeal must be made in writing within three months of your employer notifying you of the Scheme Medical Adviser's report, in up to three stages. A formal CSIBS appeal must be made within 12 months of the award decision. Please speak to your POA representative or a solicitor early rather than waiting.
