How big is the gap?

More than one and a half levels away

Plan for 8 to 10 weeks and build easy aerobic volume first. Rushing a big gap is how people get injured.

Why there is no pass percentage. No official pass level is published and no data links a practice score to a chance of passing, so any percentage would be invented. This tool shows how far you are from the reported level in shuttles, metres and time instead. The size bands are our planning heuristics.

General training and planning information based on a 15 m multi-stage table, not medical advice and not a prediction of your result. HMPPS publishes no bleep level; level 5.4 on a 15 m track is a reported standard (dated 2018 MoJ/HMPPS analytical summary for serving officers, plus a site Ofsted lists as the HMPPS Learning Centre's website). Your invitation and the recruitment team set the real test. Speak to a GP before hard training if you have any health concern, and stop if something hurts. Checked 3 October 2026.

What the prison officer fitness test calculator does

Almost every candidate search about the prison officer fitness test is really the same question: what bleep test level do I need, and how far am I from it? The calculator answers the second half exactly and the first half honestly. You set the level and shuttle you reached on a 15 m shuttle run. The tool converts that into total shuttles, distance and running time, shows where you sit on a level ladder, tells you how many shuttles you are short of the level you are comparing with, breaks the gap into the levels still to run, and lets you test what adding a few shuttles would do. A second tab lists every 15 m level with its beep interval and pace, so you can rehearse the target with an interval timer.

The first half, what level you need, is where most pages overreach. HMPPS publishes no level, so the calculator uses 5.4 on a 15 m track as a reported standard, and says so on every result. You can replace it with a custom level from your invitation letter, which is always the better source.

What is official, what is reported and what is dated

The official page (HMPPS how to apply, opened 3 October 2026) describes the fitness assessment in two parts: a bleep test with a shuttle run between two points, testing endurance and agility, and an upper-body strength test in which you hold a 7 kg riot shield and grip a piece of equipment. It follows the medical. That is all. No level, no grip weight, no hold time and no number of attempts. The numbers people quote come from two other places. A 2018 Ministry of Justice and HMPPS analytical summary says the standard minimum for serving Band 3 and 4 officers on a 15 m track was four shuttles on level 5, written 5.4, and third-party candidate sites cite a 2019 guidance document we could not open for 15 m, level 5.4, 25 kg grip in both hands, a shield held at shoulder height for a minute and an agility run in 34 seconds.

Why a 15 metre table, and how we checked it

The usual 20 m bleep test, used by many fire services, has different shuttle counts and speeds from a 15 m test. The calculator therefore uses the standard 15 m multi-stage table. As a check, levels 1 to 4 on that table hold 7, 8, 8 and 8 shuttles, which is 31, and level 5.4 adds four, which is 35 shuttles or 525 metres. Multiplying each level's shuttles by its seconds per shuttle (6.83, 6.36, 6.11, 5.75 and 5.43) gives about 215 seconds, or 3 minutes 35 seconds. That reproduces the reported 35 shuttles and 3:35 exactly, which is why we trust the table for this standard. Honest limit: HMPPS does not publish the recording its assessment centres use, so the real test may differ. The first ten levels are below.

Pace: what the reported standard means in minutes and seconds

Thirty-five shuttles of 15 m in about 215 seconds is an average of about 6.1 seconds per shuttle, or 8.8 km/h. The test starts slower and ends faster: level 1 gives you 6.83 seconds per shuttle and level 5 only 5.43. That is a short, progressively harder effort of under four minutes, not a long run, and the turns come every few seconds. That is why people who can jog comfortably for twenty minutes still find it harder than expected. The pace guide tab lets you set any running speed and see the seconds per 15 m shuttle, and check a home practice track against the timing of a recording.

How to read the gap and the readiness band

The calculator does not give a percentage chance of passing because none could be honest. Instead it reports the gap in shuttles, metres, levels and time, and places it in a band: at or above the level, within half a level, up to one and a half levels away, or further. Those bands are our planning heuristics, not a published standard. If you want a cushion for nerves and a poor night’s sleep, the plan settings let you aim two or four shuttles beyond the level, which is a personal choice. Another practical point from the 2018 research summary: officers reached an average maximum heart rate of 173 on the test and 137 on a normal shift, so the test pushes harder than the job does. That supports training for the test deliberately and arriving rested.

Grip, shield and agility

The upper-body check at the bottom of the calculator tab lets you enter your own results and compare them with the reported figures. It is not a prediction, and it is labelled reported because the official page confirms only that a grip test and a 7 kg shield hold exist. The shield is a realistic stand-in for the equipment used in planned interventions, so the test is checking that you can hold it steadily, not lift it once. For training, light-weight shoulder-height holds, carries and grip work build the endurance involved. The Fitness Pass Suite builds that into a plan using light weights only.

Medical, eyesight and hearing

The fitness test comes after the medical, which includes an eye test, a hearing test, a blood pressure check and basic health screening by an occupational health professional. The official pages say a standard exists for both eyes; third-party sites report 6/36 uncorrected and 6/12 corrected with both eyes open and hearing at about 3 m without aids, which are labelled reported. Declare any condition honestly: it will not necessarily prevent you and adjustments can be considered case by case. See medical checks, and ask recruitment specifically about adjustments to the fitness test, because the official adjustments page covers the assessment process.

What happens after you are appointed

A 2022 Inside Time report described an annual fitness test with consequences for repeated failure. The Pay Review Body's 2026 report says the test is not repeated after appointment except for certain specialist roles, and that it falls between the provisional and final offer for new recruits. The test is therefore a recruitment hurdle, not an annual worry, which is a good reason to prepare properly once. The 2018 summary also gave a higher level, 7.2, for advanced Control and Restraint officers; whether that applies now is not published, so do not assume it.

Scotland and the youth estate

Scotland uses a different test. The Scottish Prison Service publishes a treadmill run of 600 m at 6.4 mph in 3 minutes 45 seconds, grip strength of 32 kgf in the dominant hand and 30 kgf in the other, a 34 kg seated push and pull and a one-minute hold of a 120 cm riot shield, with one retake. Do not compare those numbers with a 15 m bleep level. Youth justice worker roles in the youth estate state eyesight, hearing and fitness standards of their own. Read the fitness test guide for the comparison.

Turning the gap into a plan

If you are short of the level, the next step is a structured block of easy running, shuttle-pace intervals on a marked 15 m track, a little strength work and a benchmark test in the middle and at the end. The free fitness training plan guide explains the principles. The paid Fitness Pass Suite (£14.99, one payment, 14-day money-back guarantee) builds the week-by-week plan from your own numbers, with a tracker, charts, a printable briefing and a calendar export. The free calculator is not restricted in any way; the suite adds structure, not the answer.

Frequently asked questions

What bleep test level do you need to be a prison officer?

HMPPS recruitment pages confirm a bleep test (a shuttle run between two points) but do not publish a level. The figure usually quoted is level 5.4 on a 15 m track. It is supported by a 2018 Ministry of Justice and HMPPS analytical summary for serving Band 3 and 4 officers and by a site Ofsted lists as the HMPPS Learning Centre's website, so treat it as a reported standard, not an official pass mark, and confirm with your recruitment team.

How many shuttles is level 5.4 on a 15 metre test?

On the standard 15 m multi-stage table, levels 1 to 4 contain 7, 8, 8 and 8 shuttles (31 in total) and level 5.4 adds four more, so 35 shuttles, 525 metres, in about 3 minutes 35 seconds. That matches the reported figures, which is why this calculator uses that table. HMPPS does not publish the recording its assessment centres use.

Is a 15 m bleep test the same as a 20 m one?

No. Level numbers only mean something for a specific track length and recording. A 20 m recording at level 5 is a different pace and a different number of shuttles. If you practise to a 20 m recording and reach 5.4, you have not necessarily met a 15 m standard. Mark out 15 m and use a 15 m recording.

What are the other fitness tests for prison officers?

The official page names holding a 7 kg riot shield and a grip test. Third-party sites report 25 kg grip in both hands, the shield held at shoulder height for one minute and an agility run within 34 seconds. The calculator lets you compare your own results with those reported figures, clearly labelled.

Is the fitness test repeated every year?

No longer, according to the Pay Review Body's 25th report (paragraph 2.51): the fitness test is not repeated after appointment except for certain specialist roles. Reports of an annual test come from earlier years and are dated. For new recruits the test sits between the provisional and final offer.

What if I fail the fitness test?

Retake rules for applicants are not published on current official pages. A 2018 HMPPS blog said candidates close to passing could be invited to retry, which is dated, and one third-party site claims three attempts, which we could not trace to an official document. Ask recruitment before you plan around any number of attempts.

Does this calculator give me a chance of passing?

No. No official pass level is published and no data links a practice score to a pass probability, so any percentage would be made up. The calculator shows how far you are from the reported level in shuttles, metres and time, and describes the size of the gap.

Is the training plan safe?

The plan is a cautious general training plan, not medical advice: running time rises by about 10% a week, there is a lighter week every fourth week, no more than two hard sessions a week, and upper-body work uses light weights. Speak to your GP before hard training if you have any health concern, and stop if something hurts. The plan itself is part of the paid Fitness Pass Suite; the calculator is free.

Does the calculator store my results?

Your level, shuttle and settings are remembered in your own browser so they are there next time. They are not sent to us. Analytics only see a coarse band such as level 3 to 4.
