POELT Training Explained
Everything you need to know about the 10-week Prison Officer Entry Level Training course.
What is POELT?
POELT stands for Prison Officer Entry Level Training. It is the mandatory foundation course for all new prison officers in the UK. The course typically lasts 10 weeks and combines classroom learning with practical "gym" sessions (Control and Restraint).
"The aim is to equip you with the legal knowledge, interpersonal skills, and physical techniques required to work safely in a custody environment."
Where does it happen?
Traditionally, training took place at the Prison Service College at Newbold Revel (Rugby). However, in recent years, many new recruits attend local training centers or designated training prisons closer to home to increase capacity.
Course Structure
- Weeks 1-2: Induction, security awareness, and interpersonal skills.
- Weeks 3-8: Core custody skills, C&R (Control and Restraint) techniques, and conflict resolution.
- Week 9: Assessments and exams.
- Week 10: Final consolidation and graduation.
The Fitness Requirement
During POELT, you must pass the fitness test (if you haven't already locally) and demonstrate competency in C&R. You need a basic level of fitness to safely restrain non-compliant prisoners.
Is it hard to pass?
The pass rate is high. The course is designed to help you succeed, not to trip you up. Support is available for those who struggle with the academic or physical elements.
Pay during training
Yes, you are paid your full salary from Day 1 of your employment, which includes your time at POELT. Accommodation and meals are usually provided if you are residential at Newbold Revel.
